How to Avoid Auto Accidents Caused by a Deer

Deer signThe National Safety Council reports that 530,000 animal related incidents occurred in 2003. These collisions resulted in more than 10,000 injuries. Deer are involved in a lot of these accidents.

Deer, which are quite large and very powerful animals, can cause a significant amount of damage when hit. Considering this, you may be wondering how to avoid these types of accidents.

There is no way to prevent all deer accidents from occurring. You cannot control how the animal will run out in front of you nor what your immediate reaction will be. However, these tips can help you to stay safe when driving in an area where deer are prevalent.

  • Deer tend to be most active from sunset until midnight and then before and after sunrise. During these times, be extra vigilant when driving.

  • Do not assume reflectors, fences, and other gadgets are going to be effective in warding off deer.

  • If you a deer see along the side of the road, blow your horn with a single, long blast. This could scare them into running in the opposite direction.

  • Whenever driving in a dark area, especially where you know deer are likely to be, drive with your high beams on. This will give you a better range of sight. But, don't do this unless there is no oncoming traffic.

  • Realize that deer often don’t travel alone. If you see one, there are likely others around. Drive slower in the areas where deer crossing signs are located.

Auto insurance claims for deer accidents are numerous throughout the year. By taking the time to slow down and be more observant of your surroundings, you can reduce the risk of an accident occurring.

The good news is your car insurance is there to help you avoid the financial implications of such losses. If it does happen, call your car insurance company to discuss options.
